Effective Psychotherapy
The Contribution of Hellmuth Kaiser
Third edition
With Foreword by Allen J. Enelow, M.D., and Leta McKinney Adler, Ph.D.
Louis B. Fierman, editor (First Edition)
Mitchell D. Ginsberg, editor (Third Edition)

One of the most creative, inspired, and inspiring books in its field, Effective Psychotherapy offers extended reflections on what makes for effective psychotherapy.
The author, Hellmuth Kaiser, trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute in the 1920s, where his analyst was Gustav Bally and his supervisors were Karen Horney, Sándor Radó, Wilhelm Reich, and Hanns Sachs. He then continued with further analytic work at the world’s first psychoanalytic clinic, Berlin’s Sanatorium Schloss Tegel, directed by Ernst Simmel.
In the late 1940s, he was invited to Topeka, Kansas, to be an analyst on the staff at the Menninger Clinic—itself modeled on the Sanatorium Schloss Tegel.
Ultimately, his understanding of what therapy amounts to brought him outside the confines of psychoanalysis. The results of his experience and theorizing are presented in this work, which had been out of print for over 35 years.
The second edition (2012) included several new essays to give current viewpoints on the importance and significance of Kaiser's understanding to the world of psychotherapy both past and present.
Prepared especially for this third edition (2014) are four new essays; there are two new translations, both from the German, of the 1934 critique by Kaiser's analyst, Gustav Bally, of the relationship of Carl Gustav Jung to the Nazified German psychotherapy community, and of the 1958 interview of Kaiser by Kurt Eissler, the founder of the Sigmund Freud Archives, only released from closed files and made available (in its original German) in 2013.

Healing through Pure Mindfulness
Dhiravamsa

Healing through Pure Mindfulness guides us through the transformations of consciousness that lead to the realization of nirvana.
This process begins at our human personality or ego-state level. On this level, we are all dominated ruthlessly by our ruling passions, the compulsive conditioning of our fixations, our harmful, instinctual energy patterns. These include the chief features or fixations of the various personality types. Foremost among all of these harmful patterns are greed, hate, and delusion, the principal mental infections spreading psychological torment that is harmful to our health and well being.
This healing leads from three-dimensional consciousness that roams about in the realm of samsara—the cycle of contamination, action, and consequence (kilesa, karma, and vipaka)—represented by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, to four-dimensional consciousness, a realm outside normal human experience—represented by Goethe’s Faust. Here ends the samsaric journey and begins immediately the entrance into the ever-lasting flow of nirvana.

Mindful Raft over Troubled Waters
Mitchell D. Ginsberg

The journey of this raft is to the far shore, an ancient metaphor for a consciousness that can see our realities calmly, clearly, and with great compassion, free of the distortions and reactivity that are our more usual human lot.
With this compassionate insight, this wisdom, we see other sentient beings and ourselves with understanding, appreciation, and caring good will. Here, with calm and well being, the awakened mind operates effectively, skillfully.
Mindful Raft over Troubled Waters describes and illustrates the practicing and developing of this transformed consciousness, as found in the teachings on insight (vipassanā) meditation or mindfulness practice, common to the world’s Buddhist traditions.
This book portrays this fresh consciousness in a wide range of experiences; it presents our thinking and feeling processes afresh, offering us self-understanding and a deep appreciation of our experiencing mind in all of its workings. Beyond boredom, confusion, and judgment, we clearly see here our various states of mind, trains of thought, preferences, the creation of intentions, and, ultimately, the carrying out of actions that lead us in one direction or another in our lives.

Mudras of the Buddha (His Life and Works)
Each Illustrated by its Story and Event that Took Place in the Buddha’s Time
Dhiravamsa

In Mudras of the Buddha (His Life and Works), Dhiravamsa introduces some 66 traditional images of the Buddha in various postures (or mudras) and explains the historical contexts that each of these represents.
The mudras span the time of the life of Siddhartha from when he went forth from his mundane existence to become a recluse (samana) in search of a solution to the problem of humanity’s suffering, with his earlier experiences in various meditative traditions, to his discovery of a middle path that became the core of his teachings (his dharma). Further mudras illustrate his offering of his teachings presenting his realizations of the nature of the mind and consciousness, covering particular incidents during the 45 years of his teaching, to his final moments at age 80.
The many stories of episodes in the life of the Buddha and his teachings are rarely presented in current Western literature. Here we have a treasure-chest of these mudras and their stories collected in an organized way, following the teachings of early Buddhism as passed on in the Thai Buddhist Tradition.
This rare work, rich in information and inspiration, will be an important addition to any library interested in Buddhism, in particular, and in spirituality, in general.

A Quarter Inch from My Heart
A Memoir
Kevin Scott Hall

When a near stranger contacts the author in New York City after Hurricane Katrina, Hall decides to invite him in as a roommate until he “gets back on his feet.” That never happens, and over two and a half years, as the relationship deepens, the questions about the new friend’s past only grow in number.
The author battles between compassion and tough love, between trust and suspicion. Through all of this, Hall also examines his own past and the difficulties he overcame that gave him strength.
This memoir invites us to ask: Having experienced an almost fatal wounding of our hearts, can we still open our hearts to allow in the love that heals? Can we find hope that transcends the tragedies of our lives?

Teen Voices
Tales from Family Therapy
Maurizio Andolfi and Anna Mascellani

Teen Voices: Tales from Family Therapy addresses violent behavior, bullying, drug-addiction, reactive depression, eating disorders, and suicide attempts in adolescence, from a systemic developmental perspective.
We consider the family as the main resource for resolving children’s problems (or symptoms), the larger goal of therapy being change of inter-generational distortions producing these symptoms. The model of therapy is experiential; the therapist, plays an active role: direct, authentic, emphatic, staying close to the family’s pain and despair, and responding positively to their hope and desire for change.
Creating a therapeutic alliance with the adolescent and exploring relevant family events, we employ provocation, support, humor, metaphors, curiosity, playfulness, self-disclosure, and sculpting. Family of origin, siblings, friends, pets, community members, and hospital workers are consultants in the sessions, expanding the social resources of the family searching for emotional support and solidarity.

FORTHCOMING TITLES

Hallelujahs in the Web of Time
Mitchell D. Ginsberg

Hallelujahs in the Web of Time takes us into the worlds of religion, spirituality, and contemplation. It explores the ways in which our great and respected religions have survived and been transformed through historical events, societal mores (customs and conventions), and the ethical values and practices of different cultures—in short, in the web of time.
This book delves into religion and politics—the patterns of power in groups—and into the dynamics of human intimacy and sexuality, including the dances of the man-woman relationship, with a comprehensive perspective seeking to appreciate the role of overriding values and visions, all to make sense of these powerful and influential dimensions of human life and their combined impact on all of us.
Religions offer some of the highest, most honorable, and most inspiring visions of what our species is capable of, encouraging shifts in human understanding that move society to a higher and more recognizable form of civilization. And yet, we can again see shifts back into an indiscriminate, primitive barbarity encouraged in the name of religion, calling for a response taking into account religious, ethical, philosophical, and scientific contributions to our human understanding.
With a fresh questioning and commentary throughout, this work makes use of original core texts and derivative commentaries from a number of the world’s religious and spiritual traditions.

A Write of Passage
Juliet Bruce

For thousands of years, stories have been told to awaken, heal, and empower people in need of new realities in their own lives and the state of their world. In this tradition, A Write of Passage offers a grounded transformational process for using the metaphors, characters, and plots of story to rebuild a new and meaningful life after traumatic experience, loss, or time of transition.
Interweaving stories from the world’s rich oral and written traditions with her own and her clients’ journeys, and with expressive arts exercises, Dr. Juliet Bruce guides the reader on the same storytelling path that has uplifted individuals and transformed small gatherings into complex cultures and civilizations.
And that can now help to create more conscious, compassionate societies in our time.
